[edit] What
The New Analysts Group served as a collective platform for non-object based art experiments that explored the world through a revolutionary analytical, methodical and quantitative lens. The Group replaced human and emotional connections in art with logic and analysis, which proved to be an important counterpoint to the idealism and realism.
[edit] Art
The New Analysts Group members collaborated in the conception and execution of non-object based art experiments. Beginning with the original rule that members may not sign their work, the Group established a code to follow based on their core mission to suppress individuality in art. Founding member, Wang Luyan speaks of the Group’s core values:
"Facing the rules, we are all equal. Individuals must put aside their character for the sake of the group. Since we regard the rules as more important than the artists, we express ourselves in a language of regulations. Symbols and numbers best convey our ideas." [1]
Using these symbols and numbers, Group members create graphs and carts to explain interrelationships. The Group’s deliberately hidden absolutism can be considered a playful critique on China’s history of conformity. Their originality, according to Wang Luyan, is a result of their cooperation according to the strict rules on which that agreed.[2]
[edit] Exhibition & Reception
The New Analysts Group had their first exhibition, or workshop as they referred to it, in Beijing in 1990. The Group had five workshops, “Analyst I”, “Analyst II”, “Analyst III” “Analyst IV” and “Analyst V” from 1990 and 1995.
