Art

Through his photographs and videos, Song Dong creates environments which completely encapsulate his viewers in a total sensory experience.

“Floor – Life is Wonderful” (2003)

In creating “Floor – Life is Wonderful”, Song tiled the entire floor of ShanghART gallery’s exhibition space with 3,000 black and white photographs. The photographs were selected from the over 20,000 photos thSong took as a visual diary in Shanghai between January and July 2003. The walls of the gallery were left blank, which forced visitors to literally get on their hands and knees to view the photographs varnished to the floor.[2]

“Three Days Ago” (2005)

“Three Days Ago” was created in collaboration with Electronica artist, DJ B6. The video contains eerie views of Shanghai at night, scored with a throbbing electronic soundtrack. The video’s loop-like structure results in the creation of an over-all atmosphere of an environment rather than the recounting of a narrative plot.[3]

“Yard” (2006)

“Yard”, also a collaboration with DJ B6, is a video installation designed for a narrow passageway. The installation disorients viewers, who find it hard to determine the source of video projection, which is duplicated on both walls simultaneously. The overwhelming environment makes it almost impossible for viewers to separate themselves from the artificially created space.[4]
