[edit] Date & Place of Birth
Ma Yue was born in 1968 in the Jilin Province in China's northeast.
[edit] Education & Development
In 1995, Ma graduated from Xu Beihong Studio of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, the only advanced academy of fine arts under the direct control of the Department of Education in China. In 2007, he received a post-graduate degree from the Jilin Art Academy.
[edit] Art
Ma Yue concentrates on a single subject, the crouching figure, faceless and powerless, though with a different background and circumstance each time. He is considered a favorite among beginner art collectors, though several well-established collectors hold his work as well.
Today, his work is earning praise throughout Europe and Asia. Jon Erdos, owner of Studio 83 of Singapore says, “The graphic nature of it is very recognizable. He has been in auctions in Singapore. He has done very well in auctions.”[1]
His oils are bright, colorful images, but manage to convey a sense of disturbed reality beneath their energetic exteriors. He combines elements of pop art with Chinese popular icons in a sparse plane to create an isolating effect.
Often painting groups of shrunken reproductions of himself, Ma Yue was raised in an era of a growing consumer society. He expresses his emotions towards the transformation of society by shadowing his figures with the color red, a symbol and shadow of the past.
[edit] Exhibitions
Ma Yue has exhibited in China since 2002 with “Heart of Chip,” at the Beijing Art Studio. In 2006, he showed his works at the Kunstai Art Fair in the Netherlands, and a year later, presented in an Oriental Art exhibit in Berlin. For Ma Yue’s full CV, please click here.
