As was the case for so many contemporary Chinese artists of this generation, the Maoist doctrine of the 1960s and 70s shaped the China of Li's youth. We see the world of his childhood in his artwork--blurred images rendered in gray tones offer a window into his memory. Though they are reflective of the past, they seem neither nostalgic nor judgmental. Derived from photographs, his works reflect a world that is altered, and suggest an outcome that is not predictable, and remains in constant fluctuation.[1]
