A Brief Overview of UPSC Exam and the UPSC Admit Card

The Union Public Service Commission is India’s main central recruiting agency for Group ‘A’ officers of the Government of India under Union Government Civil Services, Union Government Law Services, Union Government Functionality Services, Union Government Architecture Services, Union Government Natural Resources Services, Union Government Health Science Services, Union Government Engineering Services, and Union Government Defense Services.

The Union Public Service Commission conducts various UPSC exams such as the Civil Services Examination, Indian Economic Service – Indian Statistical Service Examination, Combined Medical Services Examination, National Defense Academy and Naval Academy Examination, Indian Forest Service Examination, Combined Defense Services Examination, Engineering Services Examination, Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, Central Armed Police Forces (ACs) Examination, CISF AC(EXE) LDCE examination, etc.

The UPSC Admit Card for the Civil Services 2021 Preliminary examination was available for download from 16th September. The UPSC Admit Card for the Civil Services 2021 Mains examination is available for download from 15th December 2021 to 16th January 2022. The UPSC Admit card should be downloaded by 4:00 PM. The candidates have to bring their photographs with them to the examination center if their photo on the admit card is blurred or has any other error. Along with the candidates’ original identity card, the printout of the UPSC e-admit card has to be carried by the candidates.

The UPSC Admit Card will have details such as the name of the candidate, date of the exam, mother’s name, father’s name, name of the examination, roll number, venue of the examination, timetable of the examination, and general instructions for the candidates. It is important to note that UPSC e-admit cards, will not be sent by post and candidates have to download them from the official UPSC website and take the printout. Candidates will have to enter their Registration ID or Roll Number before downloading the admit card. Admit card will be a PDF and it has to be downloaded this physical copy of the admit card should be carried to the examination hall. The UPSC admit card for the interview will be released after the UPSC Mains examination. It is important to note that the candidates who have successfully cleared the UPSC Mains examination will directly receive the IAS Interview call letter through email.

The UPSC Civil Service Exam is conducted through different stages. The first stage is the Preliminary stage, followed by the Mains Examination. Candidates who are able to successfully clear the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary examination will be eligible for the UPSC Civil Services Mains Examination. Candidates who clear the Mains examination will be eligible for the Civil Services Interview stage. There is ‘Negative Marking’ in the IAS Exam for each incorrect answer but only in the Prelims stage. The negative marking for incorrect answers will be 1/3rd (0.66) of the allotted marks of that question. The IAS Interview stage is also known as the Personality Test. The Preliminary stage of the Civil Service UPSC Exam contains Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and the Mains stage of the IAS Exam contains the questions which need to be answered in descriptive format.

The Mains stage of the Civil Service UPSC Exam consists of 2 optional papers, but candidates have to choose only 1 optional subject out of 48 different optional subjects. The English Language is covered in Paper B of the Mains examination, and Paper A covers one of the Compulsory Indian Languages. Candidates have to choose 1 Language paper out of the list of languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.  The other 4 papers are General Studies Paper – I, General Studies Paper – II, General Studies Paper – III, and General Studies Paper – IV.
