Work by artist Gu Dexin (b. 1962, Beijing, China) can often be smelled before it is seen. Gu’s site-specific installations are most often conceived with perishable materials like fruit and meat – their inevitable decay being a central component to the work. Installations that play on human senses have dominated Gu’s oeuvre since his emergence onto the Chinese contemporary art scene in the mid-1980s. Gu lives and works in Beijing.

[edit] Education & Development

Never having formally studied art, Gu made a name for himself through his provocative experiments of altering and reshaping plastics in the mid-80s in Beijing.[1]  For the next decade, Gu formed and dissolved art groups with fellow artists through which they conceived installations together. In 1987, Gu formed the Tactile Sensations Group which remained active for a year. In 1988, Gu formed the Xinkedu Group (New Analysts Group) with Chen Shaoping and Wang Luyan. This group collaborated on non-object base experiments, which proved to be an important contribution to the Chinese contemporary art’s early manifestations through the introduction of methodical, logical, and analytical processes in place of human emotion in art. The New Analysts Group dissolved in 1995.[2] [3]

[edit] Art

Gu’s interest in perishable and grotesque materials began in the mid-80s. Today, he continues to conceive large, site-specific installations that played on the human senses through the sights and smells of decay. Titled with the date on which they are installed, Gu removes any hint of the artist’s interpretation of the work, and in fact, refuses to be interviewed or discuss his installations with the public. Because of their title and decay being a central element of his works, Gu’s installations rely heavily on the passage of time. His materials include rotting meats, bananas and apples, plastic, phallic figures, images of rotting flesh, and other provocative elements that suggest vulgarity and decay. In addition to decay and the passage of time, Gu considers the history and nature of the location of the instillation as a primary concern in his conception.
