Art
A protégé of Zhou Xiaohu, and now a young professor himself, photographer and video artist Dong Wensheng takes a deceptively formalist approach to his work. There is a benign superficiality to the highly-finished photographs that belies a certain quirk, a jolt to the eye and the brain. The films, with their stately pace, lull the viewer with their visual lushness, only to provide a shock at the conclusion.[2]Dong says his work seeks to show the growth and development of an individual within his or her environment. The menstrual blood shown running down a young girl’s leg in Meiyu (Rainy Season) is, perhaps, a more poetic example of this intent, while the suicide in Jing Zhe (Awakening from Hibernation) is clearly a form of self-recognition that sits uncomfortably at odds with Western notions of human progress.[2]
