[edit] ARTIST ENTRY

Artist Name

Images: Photos of work and life should appear throughout, a picture of the artist herself should be placed after the 2-3 sentence summary of her achievement at the top. Photos should be accompanied by a short, neutral description using the caption tool. Captions for photos of artworks should read: Yuan Jiang, Landscape with Pavillion (1720). Screen painting, 246 cm (h) x 490 cm (w), Kyoto National Museum, Kyoto Japan.

Describing and discussing the connections between life and art is encouraged, eg the Luo Brothers, who grew up among the posters of the Cultural Revolution, now live in a new Beijing of McDonalds and Coca-Cola logos. The brothers’ paintings, which blend Socialist Realism, Political Pop, and a generous serving of kitsch, reflect the changing and multidimensional face of modern China.

  • 3-4 sentence summary of achievement, including birthdate, place and current residence
  • Photo of artist
  • Date & Place of Birth
  • Childhood & Family
  • Education & Development Please pay special attention to influential professors, mentors etc
  • Art Again, please pay special attention to influences. Eg for an artist influenced by traditional brush-and-ink painting, we want to know how the artist was influenced
    • For an artist with a career long enough to include several phases and series, each should be separately presented in consecutive, differently titled sub-sections beneath the “Art” heading
    • Describe appearance, medium/materials, subject of work, including (art) historical and pop cultural meanings and associations/resonances, as well as process and working methods involved in production
    • Affiliations in relevant artists’ groups (or movements) that contextualize the individual artist’s work, which, of course would be discussed more fully in the linked entry about that movement
  • Emergence & Reception Date and circumstances of emergence, especially an influential exhibition(s) in a new, artistic direction, critical enthusiasm, or involvement in an incident of controversy or interest.
    • For an artist with several art series, styles or phases to describe, Emergence & reception may be placed among them
  • Secondary Activities only If appropriate, do not include in Table of contents if not. Very briefly describe the perhaps secondary, art-related activities of the artist, including teaching at an art school or university. For a multi-faceted artist such as Ai Weiwei note his roles in 1-2 sentences each, as curator (the Fuck Off! Exhibition), art historian (Black-, White- and Gray Cover Books), architect/designer (“Bird’s Nest” stadium), community organizer/blogger/activist (East Village).
  • Awards & Honors if appropriate
  • Exhibitions A 2-3-4 sentence summary of exhibitions (museums and commercial venues)
    • Preferably specific, as in “The most serious summary exhibition of Zhang’s Sichuan work was Lost in the Dreams, a solo show staged in 1989 by the Gallery of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, in Chongqing, China. His Bloodline series debuted on an international stage at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 1995 in the Italian-organized exhibition The Other Face: Three Chinese Artists. Since the inclusion of his paintings in the epochal China Avant-Garde show at the National Gallery in Beijing in 1989, his work has been seen in nearly all of the important, international group exhibitions devoted to contemporary Chinese art. PaceWildenstein Gallery, among the most prominent in New York, mounted a solo exhibition of his work called Revision in 2008.”
    • But generalize from a CV if necessary, as in “____ has shown her work throughout China since 1993 and internationally since 2002. Her paintings have been seen in both solo and group exhibitions at prestigious venues ranging from the Louvre and Beijing National Gallery, to the Sao Paulo Bienal and PS 1 (NY).”
