[edit] Date & Place of Birth

Cindy Ng Sio leng was born in Macao in 1966.

[edit] Education & Development

She studied etching for a few years around 1990, as a student of Bartholomeu dos Santos, the Head of Department of Etching in the Slade School of Fine Arts of London University; Mr. James Wong was her mentor. A brief stay in London from 1993 to 1994 became a turning point in her life as an artist. She was advised by Mr. Bartolomeu dos Santos to visit the Research Office of the Gallery of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting at the British Museum, where she studied a rich collection of calligraphy and paintings, interpreting the moods of the works of scholar-painters, and learning about the influence of Taoism on Chinese aesthetics. This experience enriched and influenced her later works.[1]

[edit] Art

Ng Sio leng is dedicated to integrating philosophies and Western approaches to painting through constant exploration. She applies the characteristically empty areas of Chinese painting to boldly create imaginative space, imbuing each stroke with creative feeling.  Explaining here approach, she says: "My work respects natural action. In painting, it is the act of painting, where the ink is the essence and the creator insignificant."[2][3]

[edit] Exhibitions

In October, 2009, Cindy Ng participated in "Wuwei: Being and Nothing" at Shanghai's Art+ art space.  The show was described as four artists working in video, painting and sound installation exploring the schism between what existential philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre referred to as being-in-itself and being for-itself, and the Taoist concept of "Wu Wei" or action without desire, motivation or intention.  Ng offered an ink and water video comprising black and white images of deserts, horses, mountains twirling in the wind and skies falling. Ink flows in unpredictable directions, presenting the world's collapse and reformation, but offering the viewer no control over its shape and structure. [4]
