[edit] Art

Art Intern journalist Xi Chuan argues in a 2008 article that if there were one word to describe Chen Shuxia’s paintings, it would be “poetic.” In fact, she makes this word self-update to accommodate her paintings. Viewers feel something beautiful, quiet, self-sufficient and free as they view her canvasses. Among those painters of the new generation with works commonly flaunted as cynical, intranquil, dangerous, angry, satiric, and ugly, there is no place for Chen Shuxia.[1]

He goes on to say that: "like the Chinese proverbial Monkey King (Sun Wukong) who makes a circle to protect Monk Tang, Piggy and Monk Sha, Chen Shuxia, too, makes a safe space. The difference is that she makes the circle for herself to jump into. Unless she walks herself out, all evils are powerless to break into it. She is not an iconic painter (though she has her own icons), nor a language painter (though she uses her own language); it seems that rather we should call her an emotional painter, who creates her own world and with her paintings invites you to take a trip into her the deepest corners of her mind."[2]

[edit] Emergence & Reception

In 1992, Chen Shuxia began drawing portraits of family members and good friends, with the background always fixed as the same familiar room of her house. Chen has carried this personal approach through to the present, just recently explaining in an interview: “I learn that the meanings of the two words "to draw" and "to live" are mixed up." Chen has since traded that room for a large studio on the outskirts of Beijing that borders the studio of her husband, artist Liu Qinghe.[2]

[edit] Awards & Honors

In 2006, Chen was a candidate for “Xiao Shufang Art Fund” Excellent Female Painter award. In 1999, she was awarded the Bronze Medal a The 9th National Art Exhibition Excellent Award of Literature Works Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China. In 1995, she earned the Bronze Medal at the 3rd Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition. In 1991, she was rewarded the Silver Medal at the 1st Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition. In 1985, she won the Bronze Medal at the Academy Show of the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
