Art
Chen's signature works, the ongoing series Streets (begun in 1997), feature cutouts of urban scenes held up at arm's length and reshot against other city milieus. The jumble of times, places, and cultures echoes life in fast-growing Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta, as well as Chen's natal city of Shantou on the eastern coast, one of the ports forced open by Western powers in the nineteenth century and a Special Economic Zone since the 1980s.[1]
Chen's variations on the mad-urbanization theme include his Ink City (2005-present) wash drawings, slide projections and videos, and his Homescape installation of room interior cutouts placed in a grid of one hundred identically sized boxes. Aware that globalism brings physical danger along with it social changes, he has made numerous post-9/11 photographs and videos in which tall buildings in China bend or part in order to avoid being smashed by an onrushing jetliner. In other cases, structures that do not react are digitally exploded.[1]Exhibitions
